The views of the Earth are really beautiful. If you’ve ever seen a space IMAX movie, that’s really what it looks like. I wish I’d had more time just to sit and look out the window with a map, but our science program kept us very busy in the lab most of the time.

David McDowell Brown (April 16, 1956 – February 1, 2003), United States Navy captain and a NASA astronaut. He died on his first spaceflight when the Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-107) disintegrated during orbital reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere.

On April 5, 2019, from an altitude of 255 miles (410 km), an Expedition 59 crewmember photographed the Richat Structure, or the “Eye of the Sahara“, in northwestern Mauritania. The circular geologic feature is thought to be caused by an uplifted dome-geologists would classify it as a domed anticline-that has been eroded to expose the originally flat rock layers.

4. The desert nations of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Israel and Jordan, June 10

The Nile River, the Red Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea are contrasted by the desert nations of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Jordan as the International Space Station orbits 254 miles (409 kilometers) above Africa. The result is one of the most beautiful Earth photos from space in 2019.

The Nile, a north-flowing river in Africa, is among the world’s longest waterways, famed for its ancient history and the archaeological sites along its shores. The fertile Lower Nile gave rise to early Egyptian civilization and is still home to the Great Pyramids and Sphinx of Giza near Cairo. Sightseeing boats, from luxury liners to traditional felucca sailboats, also cruise between the cities of Luxor and Aswan.

The International Space Station was orbiting 252 miles (406 km) above southeastern Kazakhstan with a ground distance of 72 miles (116 km) from Issykul-Lake when this photograph was taken. Issyk-Kul is the seventh-deepest lake in the world, the tenth-largest lake in the world by volume (though not in surface area), and the second-largest saline lake after the Caspian Sea.

Issyk-Kul means “warm lake” in the Kyrgyz language; although it is surrounded by snow-capped peaks, it never freezes.
