“The Pearl” is an artificial island off the coast of Doha, spanning nearly four million square meters. As of January 2015, there were 12,000 residents. Once fully completed, The Pearl will create over 32 kilometers of new coastline, for use as a residential estate with an expected 18,831 dwellings and 45,000 residents by 2018.

The name “The Pearl” was chosen because the island is being built on one of Qatar’s previous major pearl diving sites. Qatar was one of the major pearl traders of Asia before the Japanese introduced cheaper more affordable pearls just before Qatar’s oil boom. The Pearl Qatar will help represent Qatar’s rich past in the pearl industry. Once completed The Pearl will resemble a string of pearls.

Doha is the capital city and with a population of 1,351,000, the most populous city of the State of Qatar. It is located on the coast of the Persian Gulf in the east of the country. It is Qatar’s fastest growing city, with over 50% of the nation’s population living in Doha or its surrounding suburbs, and it is also the economic centre of the country.

Doha was founded in the 1820s as an offshoot of Al Bidda. Pearling had come to play a pivotal commercial role in Doha by the 20th century. It was officially declared as the country’s capital in 1971, when Qatar gained independence from being a British Protectorate.
