Farout: the most-distant body ever observed in Solar System

Researchers discovered the farthest known object in our solar system and named it “Farout” (far-out-there). It is about 120 times farther than Earth is from the Sun (120 AU Notes 1). For comparison, the most distant planet, Neptune is about 30 AU from the Sun. At its most distant, once upon a time the ninth planet, […]

Watch: Yet Another Scale Model of the Solar System

Previously I posted articles titled “If The Moon Were Only 1 Pixel – A Tediously Accurate Map Of The Solar System” and “A Scale Model Of Solar System Drawn In The Desert And The Result Is Stunning”. Since the human brain cannot deal with the really large numbers, these articles provide amazing ways to understand how […]

Size comparison of the Sun and the planets

This size comparison of the Sun and the planets in our solar system is going around frequently, but it’s still amazing to see it. Created by the San Francisco-based artist Roberto Ziche, the image features the Sun in the background with the planets, Moon and the four dwarf planets lined up in the foreground in the […]

Watch: 12 Years Ago, New Horizons’ fantastic voyage began with a spectacular launch

Twelve years ago, on January 19, 2006, aboard an Atlas V rocket, NASA’s New Horizons probe started its fantastic voyage of exploration with a spectacular launch from the Florida coast toward Pluto and the mysterious realm of the Kuiper Belt beyond. Video: two views of launch of NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft aboard an Atlas V […]

Planet Nine – Where is it?

In January 2015, Caltech (California Institute of Technology) astronomers Konstantin Batygin and Michael E. Brown published an article titled Evidence For A Distant Giant Planet In The Solar System and announced calculation-based evidence of a massive ninth planet. Despite they have had started their research to demonstrate that there’s no ninth planet, they reached the […]

Astronomers Think There is a 9th Planet Beyond Pluto – And It’s a Giant!

Astronomers now think there’s a 9th planet in the solar system almost certainly (hint: it’s not Pluto). The farthest planet from our Sun is probably a giant, smaller than Neptune but likely larger than the Earth. It is informally called Phattie, but commonly known as Planet Nine.
