Design thinking, defined by the Interaction Design Foundation as “a non-linear, iterative process which seeks to understand users, challenge assumptions, redefine problems, and create innovative solutions to prototype and test” is not just for college students and professionals. The earlier in life kids learn how to engage in this process, the better grasp they’ll have on working with new and emerging technologies.

This kind of thinking requires blending creativity, critical reflection, and empathy. 3D printing, which is still in its early stages, gives kids a chance to practice all these skills and prepares them to work with different technologies, whatever those may become as they grow up. Workshops like the City X Project are giving kids these opportunities.
